Sustainability work goes on all year long at Central Connecticut State University, and the university’s resident students contributed in a big way at the end of the spring semester.
Led by Kelly Selby of the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Office, what’s known as the annual Devil’s Move-Out Donation Drive encourages resident students before they move out for the summer to donate leftover food stuffs and unwanted furniture, clothing, electronics, and other household items to local shelters to divert them from landfills.
Assisted by the Central Sustainability Club, Selby and EHS assistant Jonathan Famiglietti collected two Dumpsters’ worth of items that will be donated to local nonprofits, including the Greater Hartford Catholic Worker, House of Bread, and Upon this Rock Ministries. Anything left over was picked up by the Hartsprings Foundation. Donations this year included tables and chairs, two small couches, televisions, holiday decorations, an air hockey table, lamps, microwaves, and much more.
Non-perishable food items went to Maria’s Place, Central’s on-campus food pantry.
The Devils Move-Out Donation Drive is in its fourth year. It is one of many recent programs and partnerships implemented by the university to make all facilities more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
