In my lab we study embryonic development, using zebrafish as a model system, and tissue regeneration, using planarian flatworms as a model system. Zebrafish, which produce hundreds of small, transparent, rapidly developing embryos daily, are ideal for studying development. Our first zebrafish project focuses on understanding the cell signals that promote cell division and cell differentiation during development of the embryo. Together these processes create the large number and diversity of cell types in the embryo. Secondly, we are studying drug toxicity during embryonic development. Planaria are champions of regeneration, able to regenerate any part of their body. We use planaria to study how developmental signals are reused during tissue regeneration.
