Beyond Sugar: Gender, Slavery, Emancipation, and the Puerto Rican Afterlives of Slavery and its Historical Narratives

The Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Center will host a talk with Rosa Emilia Cordero Cruz, a fourth-year history student at Rutgers, studying Latin American and Caribbean and Women and Gender History. Her current project explores Black women, slavery, and emancipation in the Arecibo District of Puerto Rico during the 19th century. Before her admission to Rutgers, she received a B.A. from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, where she was a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow and a member of the university’s Honors Program. At Rutgers, she is the co-founder and co-convener of CLAS's Interdisciplinary Caribbean Working Group.
