Central President Zulma R. Toro selected five students to receive 2022 President’s Citation Awards. The President’s Citation is presented annually to outstanding seniors nominated by faculty and staff and selected by the President’s Office for their leadership on campus, volunteerism, and academic success.
“These students exemplify our university’s vibrant community of individuals who are dedicated to their intellectual and personal growth,” says Central President Zulma R. Toro. “While maintaining rigorous academic schedules, they also find time to present research at conferences; compete in academic contests; and complete prestigious internships. I applaud them for their diligence and leadership.”
The winners, and some of their many achievements, are highlighted below.
Sydney Beckwith of Uncasville, a Nursing major, created the Cancer Awareness Club for her fellow survivors at Central. She was recognized as a Bristol Myers Squibb National Scholar in 2021 and was presented with the CCSU Nightingale Nursing Award for 2022 in recognition of her commitment to professionalism and compassionate care in the clinical setting.
Garrett Copeland of Burlington, who will earn his Bachelor of Science in Management, has been actively involved with the campus radio station, 107.7 WFCS, since his sophomore year. His commitment and dedication allowed the radio station to carry on its mission throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in accordance with federal, state, and Central protocols.
Nicole Elsinger of Windsor Locks, an Accounting and General Mathematics double major, served for two years as Student Government Association treasurer before she was elected president this year. Nicole also has served on the Integrated Planning Committee, University Planning and Budget Committee, Faculty Senate Student Affairs Committee, and the Vaccine Mandate Working Group.
Trinitee Williams of Windsor, a Strategic Communications major, has been supporting her fellow students since her freshman year. She served as a program coordinator and facilitator for the Women’s Center; she has welcomed dozens of students to campus as an orientation leader and resident assistant; managed public relations for the Black Student Union; and volunteered for the Girls and STEM program.
Tia Meares of Tolland, a Sociology major, worked her way up to president of the Central Activities Network, after serving as CAN’s vice president of marketing and membership and wellness chair. Tia also served as interim chair of the Student Union Board of Governors; secretary of the CCSU chapter of Habitat for Humanity; and a tutor and mentor for TRiO’s Jumpstart program.
