Dr. Beth Merenstein, professor of Sociology, has accepted a new, dual role as the Interim Associate Vice President for Community Engagement and Experiential Learning and the Executive Director of the Center for Public Policy and Social Research (CPPSR).
In her new position, which began July 1, Dr. Merenstein reports directly to President Zulma R. Toro. She is leading the development, design, and implementation of community engagement and experiential learning programs while building synergies with the CPPSR.
Dr. Merenstein is working closely with Provost Kim Kostelis to develop proposals, policies, and procedures for integrating community engagement in teaching, research, and service-learning initiatives. She also is collaborating with Academic Affairs and Students Affairs to establish and implement a plan that ensures every Central student has access to experiential learning opportunities. Among the collaborators is Jessica Hernandez. As the newly appointed Director of College Success and Community Engagement in Academic Affairs, Hernandez will continue to develop K-12 partnerships.
As the CPPSR’s executive director, Dr. Merenstein is replacing Steve Kliger who recently retired following many years of dedicated service to the University and the state. In this capacity, Dr. Merenstein is building collaborative relationships with internal, external, and governmental partners and pursuing grants and other revenue sources that lead to research opportunities for faculty and students. Her oversight also extends to the William A. O’Neill Endowed Chair in Public Policy and Practical Politics and the appointment of its next recipient.
