We are happy to award our annual Sigrid Schultz scholarship to two of our students. Lucas Pauluk, a senior from West Hartford, placed first. This is the second time Pauluk, who is in the department’s print and digital sequence, has won a scholarship in this competition. He tied for second place last year. Savanna Yelling, a sophomore from Windsor, placed second. Yelling is in the department’s broadcast sequence.
In addition to our usual Sigrid Schultz scholarship awards, the department also created a special category for freshmen to compete for travel stipends for our spring study abroad course to France. The stipends were given to Aniya Pouncey, a major from New Britain, and Elijah Hernandez, a major from Manchester.
Since 2011, the department has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships through a fund set up by the estate of Sigrid Schultz, an American war correspondent who was among the first journalists to report on the dangers of the rise of Adolph Hitler and Nazism. Schultz, who lived in Westport at the time of her death in 1980, wanted a scholarship to help student journalists. Central journalism majors are asked to write essays on various themes in Sigrid Schultz’s life. This year’s contest focused on aspects of her courage and continued relevance. The department also considers students' involvement in campus media and other activities that contribute to the journalism community.
