Our Center for Community Engagement & Social Research strives to integrate teaching, research, and service through engagement in the greater New Britain community.
Central provides students with experiential education opportunities that emphasize creative work and learning through university-community collaborations that provide a mutual benefit to all involved.
Community engaged learning opportunities include:
Service-Learning incorporates experiential activities, personal reflection, and action in the community. Opportunities can be conducted through a course, campus experience, or by a student club/organization.
Volunteering allows students to give their time and labor for community service. This can be a one-time as-needed occurrence, or students can maintain a regular schedule for their volunteer work.
Community Engaged Courses involve professors who partner with business, municipalities, and organizations to involve students in projects that bring classroom learning into the real world.
Internships and Practicums provide students with direct experience in a work setting—preferably related to their career path—and provides supervision from professionals in the field. These are often taken for course credit and can be paid or unpaid. Students doing unpaid internships can apply for the Community Engaged Experiential Learning Stipend (CEELS) Program, for which students can earn up to $3,000!
Central Cares is a student club that promotes caring and community service by volunteering time and skills to those in need. Past events include Go Baby Go where students modify battery-operated ride-on vehicles for children with mobility issues.
Study Abroad courses provide Central students with opportunities to travel to 17 countries where they can gain first-hand experiences with foreign languages and cultures. We maintain more than 20 partnerships and exchanges in countries where students may study for a full academic year or participate in short-term courses.
