In recognition for “valuable and sustained service,” Central Connecticut State University received the 2024 James S. Pula Distinguished Service Award from the Polish American Historical Association (PAHA).
Dr. Carmen Veloria, Dr. Mark Jones, and university archivist Renata Vickrey accepted the award at PAHA’s recent award ceremony held at the historic Kosciuszko Foundation in New York City on Jan. 4.
Central and its Polish Studies program have built a longstanding relationship with PAHA. In remarks on behalf of the university, Vickrey noted, “We are deeply grateful for this recognition and for the meaningful partnership we have shared with the Polish American Historical Association over the past two decades. Central is proud of our Polish Studies Program, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Led by two renowned historians, Professor Stanislaus A. Blejwas and Professor Mieczysław Biskupski, the program has been the cornerstone of our close collaboration with PAHA.”
Since its inauguration in January 1974, the Polish Studies program at Central has served students and the broader central Connecticut community by interpreting and offering perspectives on historic developments that reshaped global politics and human rights during the fourth quarter of the 20th century.
An affiliate of the American Historical Association, PAHA promotes research and publication of scholarly materials focused on Polish American history and culture as part of the greater Polish diaspora.
