For the 19th year, Central hosted Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) training on campus in January, with 120 volunteers including students from Central and other colleges and local high schools as well as community residents. The volunteers learned the latest tax laws to become IRS certified VITA tax preparers to prepare and e-file tax returns for free! Training took place during winter break, and volunteers completed their certification on Jan. 18--just in time for tax season.
What started in 2007 with a small gathering of volunteers with Co-Opportunity of Hartford and the IRS on a weekend in November has thrived. Last tax season, HRA of New Britain, Central's local community action agency partner, and these VITA volunteers were able to secure income tax refunds of approximately $11 million for low-income individuals in the local community.
