10 - 10:45 a.m. | Agricultural Impacts of a Changing Climate in New York State Katherine Johns-Galvin, Geography Graduate Student, Central The Earth’s changing climate has played out dramatically in the Northeastern United States over the course of the last decade. From Canada’s worst wildfire season in 2023 burning up almost 15 million hectares and impacting air quality from Boston to Hartford and New York City (BBC.com 2023) to torrential downpours and flooding in a “200-year event” in Massachusetts (Casey and McCormack 2023), to hurricanes in Maine (Sharp, Whittle and Butaky 2023), one does not have to go far to witness the impacts. However, climate change is impacting our region in subtler ways too that do not grab the headlines. This presentation will present “in-progress” research on one such impact. Through an exploration of how climate change is affecting our region using three key indicators, temperature change, instances of extreme precipitation, and changes in the length of growing seasons between 1950 and 2020 in the state of New York, this presentation endeavors to illustrate the fragility of local food systems and the need for ongoing adaptability in agricultural practices. |
