Allied Post Bacc in English Ed and English MA for Teachers Programs

This accelerated pathway allows students with a BA in English or its equivalent to receive their Teacher Licensure Certification in English for Secondary Education while completing a master’s degree in English through the English Department’s Hybrid Online Track for Teachers.By permitting students to apply six credits of coursework in the post bacc toward their MA degree, this pathway enables students to complete both programs in as little as two and a half years without delaying time to certification!

This pathway is designed for students who wish to teach at the middle or high school level and who have not yet received certification through another state program. Students who complete the Allied Programs also position themselves closer to public education requirements – such as the MA-level pay raise, highest level degree required, and ability to begin 6th year studies – while also receiving a stronger foundation in the subject area than in many comparator programs.

For students admitted to the Allied Post-bacc in English Ed and English MA for Teachers Programs, two 3-credit classes, ENG 507 and ENG 520, will be counted in both the post-bacc program (as requirements) and the English MA program’s teacher track (as electives). In addition, students in this pathway may take up to five 500-level English MA courses (including summer courses) before formally matriculating as a graduate student in the MA program. Upon completion of the requirements for the post-bacc program, students will submit a change of program form and complete the requirements for the English MA teacher track.

Eligible students should express their interest in the Allied Post-bacc in English Ed and English MA for Teachers Programs when they apply to the post-bacc program, or any time thereafter. Students must meet the admissions requirements for both the post-bacc and English MA programs, and their applications will be reviewed by both committees.
