Before You Transfer
How does the transfer process work?
- The first step is to apply through the Office of Recruitment and Admissions. Be prepared to submit official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and any other required documents for the application process.
- Once you are formally admitted & confirmed, you will have the opportunity to meet with an advisor from the school of your major to discuss your transferred credits and what requirements you have remaining so that you can plan out your time at Central.
- You will be invited to attend Transfer Orientation shortly before your first semester. We think EVERY transfer student should participate in Transfer Orientation!
- Finally, start your first semester and enjoy!
When is the right time to transfer?
- If you are transferring from a CT State Community College, it is highly recommended that you complete your Associate’s degree. However, degree completion is not required to apply. You should apply to Central at least one full semester prior to your intended start date.
- If you are transferring from any other institution, it is advantageous to transfer as early as possible. This ensures you are meeting our program requirements in the correct sequence, facilitating a seamless progression towards graduation.
Should I complete all of my General Education requirements at my current institution before transfer?
- We recommend that you do not complete all your general education requirements before transferring. Our programs are designed to integrate major and general education courses throughout each semester over your four years. Additionally, due to course sequencing and prerequisites, it may be difficult to take a full semester of major-specific courses in your first few semesters. It's important to follow the advised blend to ensure a smooth academic progression.
How does the transfer application process compare to the first-year application process?
- The transfer application process often focuses more on your college experience and performance. You will need to provide official college transcripts from all institutions you’ve attended. Occasionally we may ask for course descriptions and/or course syllabi.
Can I still graduate in four years if I transfer?
- It depends on how your transferred credits fit into your new program. Consult with academic advisors to create a plan to stay on track.
How do I know if my credits will transfer to the new institution?
- We accept all academic-level (100-level or above) classes with a grade of C- or better from appropriately accredited institutions. Under some circumstances, we may also consider courses with a D- or better from institutions within the CSCU system. Keep in mind, though, anything below a C- will not count in your major. There are also some programs that require even higher than a C- for courses in the major. Your advisor will help you sort this out.
If I am following a Transfer Ticket/Pathway from CT State, will I be on track?
- Yes! Work closely with your Guided Pathway Advisor at CT State to make sure you're on track to complete your Associate’s degree while preparing for a seamless transition to Central. We highly recommend that you start at Central the very next semester after earning your Associate’s at CT State. Don’t delay if you want to ensure a smooth transfer.
Can I apply if I was previously rejected?
- Yes, your new academic performance and experiences may improve your chances of acceptance.
Once You have been admitted
I took a course that seems similar to a Central requirement, but it didn't transfer in as meeting the requirement. What can I do?
- You can always ask that a course be reviewed by the appropriate academic department. This is a conversation to have with your advisor during your Transfer Advising Session. You may need to provide a course description and/or a syllabus for the course. If you haven’t met with your advisor yet, you can email TransferServices@ccsu.edu for guidance.
Am I eligible for financial aid as a transfer student?
- Yes, transfer students are often eligible for financial aid. Be sure to fill out the FAFSA and check with the financial aid offices at both your current and prospective schools for specific information.
Is living on campus a requirement for transfer students?
- Living on campus is not required at Central, but we do encourage that you consider it as it is very convenient and the quickest way to become a member of the Central community.
