In the 21st century, public safety professionals require advanced preparation to meet the sector’s dynamic and evolving needs. Our mission is to inspire and support a new generation of diverse and compassionate public safety professionals. The Criminology and Criminal Justice Department is committed to providing experiential and educational opportunities that prepare our students for success in the field.

Public Safety Specialization
Students that declare for the specialization will receive specialized training essential for 21st-century public safety professions. This curriculum is grounded in the applied and practical needs expressed by our executive police fellows and the advisory board. The public safety specialization will better prepare students with a dedicated interest in public safety for the field.

College Police Academies
We are proud to offer externships - short-term, experiential learning opportunities with local police departments. The externships take the form of college police academies, allowing our students exposure to the police profession early in their academic careers.

Executive Police Fellows
We have partnered with regional police chiefs and executives to create a police consortium and executive police fellowship program. These police executive fellows serve on an advisory board and are directly involved in creating the public safety tract within the criminology major.

Public Safety High School Pipeline
We have created a pipeline with Connecticut vocational, technical, and public high schools offering special public safety and protective services courses to expose prospective college students to the criminology major and public safety initiatives at CCSU. Our Criminal Justice Club engages in a mentorship program with these students to answer their questions and help prepare them for college life.
