Peer Leaders

Who?  

Peer Leaders are specially selected upper-class students from across campus to guide and support first-year students within an FYE course with a faculty or staff member. These students have a special opportunity to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support incoming first-year students.  

What?  

FYE Peer Leaders  

  • FYE Peer Leaders play key roles in assisting first-year students with the transition to Central
  • Peer Leaders work cooperatively with instructors to serve guides and supports for first-year students
  • Peer Leaders should be proactive in directing students to different opportunities and resources on campus
  • Serve as a peer resource that the students feel comfortable approaching at any time with questions or concerns

How?  

  • Have a minimum GPA of of 2.0 (if your GPA is lower than this, please reach out to us)  
  • Enroll in 2 credit FYE 301 course in the fall  
  • Attend all mandatory trainings
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner when representing the university  
  • Communicate effectively new students and to faculty and staff  
  • Exemplify pride in Central and share your story with others  

Why?  

  • Earn 2 credits in FYE 301 and build your resume
  • Build your communication, collaboration, leadership, teaching, planning, and presentation skills
  • Connect with other students, faculty, and staff and build your network  

What are the responsibilities?  

  • Attend assigned FYE class every week  
  • Attend and actively participate in FYE 301 (Peer Leader course) and complete all associated assignments  
  • Attend August training session  
  • Meet with faculty weekly to plan and coordinate classes and instruction  
  • Connect first-year students with campus resources and campus clubs and orgs  
  • Meet one on one with students at least once a semester outside of the classroom  
  • Plan in class activities and coordinate out of class activities to campus culture events (events, sporting events, lectures, etc.)  
  • Respond to student emails  
  • Teach at least one class  
  • Connect with assigned faculty members when facing a difficult student situation that makes you uncomfortable

Applications are due February 14th at 11:59 pm  

Interviews will take place late February into March  

It is the goal to have students selected before Spring Break.
