Peer Leaders are specially selected upper-class students from across campus to guide and support first-year students within an FYE course with a faculty or staff member. These students have a special opportunity to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support incoming first-year students. Â
What? Â
FYE Peer Leaders Â
- FYE Peer Leaders play key roles in assisting first-year students with the transition to Central
- Peer Leaders work cooperatively with instructors to serve guides and supports for first-year students
- Peer Leaders should be proactive in directing students to different opportunities and resources on campus
- Serve as a peer resource that the students feel comfortable approaching at any time with questions or concerns
How? Â
- Have a minimum GPA of of 2.0 (if your GPA is lower than this, please reach out to us) Â
- Enroll in 2 credit FYE 301 course in the fall Â
- Attend all mandatory trainings
- Conduct yourself in a professional manner when representing the university Â
- Communicate effectively new students and to faculty and staff Â
- Exemplify pride in Central and share your story with others Â
Why? Â
- Earn 2 credits in FYE 301 and build your resume
- Build your communication, collaboration, leadership, teaching, planning, and presentation skills
- Connect with other students, faculty, and staff and build your network Â
What are the responsibilities? Â
- Attend assigned FYE class every week Â
- Attend and actively participate in FYE 301 (Peer Leader course) and complete all associated assignments Â
- Attend August training session Â
- Meet with faculty weekly to plan and coordinate classes and instruction Â
- Connect first-year students with campus resources and campus clubs and orgs Â
- Meet one on one with students at least once a semester outside of the classroom Â
- Plan in class activities and coordinate out of class activities to campus culture events (events, sporting events, lectures, etc.) Â
- Respond to student emails Â
- Teach at least one class Â
- Connect with assigned faculty members when facing a difficult student situation that makes you uncomfortableÂ
