Student Leader Toolkit

Are you a leader of a student-led club or organization? Below is a guide to help you in your leadership journey.

Review the club’s mission, found in the club constitution, in order to establish clear goals for your organization.

  • Every student-led club has a constitution from when they were established.
  • These living documents provide guidance to club leaders.
  • Each constitution outlines the purpose or mission of the club.
  • Use this mission to create goals, objectives, and action items. All club activities should relate back to the club mission!

Create a welcoming environment where members feel like they belong.

  • Invite students to your meetings and events – some students don’t know if they are allowed to join unless they are invited. You can do this on Club Central if you have email addresses.
  • Take attendance so students know that their presence is appreciated.
  • Consider recognition activities such as member of the month or write thank you notes to those who went above and beyond.
  • Host activities that allow members to get to know each other. Consider starting your meetings with a Question of the Day.
  • Delegate responsibilities to members to give them opportunities to use their talents to help your organization.

Build relationships with campus partners.

  • Set up a meeting with your Faculty Advisor. They likely have a wealth of knowledge about your club. Chat about what expectations you have of the Faculty Advisor based on your club’s needs.
  • Maintain excellent communication with your Student Activities and Leadership Development (SA/LD) Program Advisor. They want to help you reach your goals and can help you navigate all of the university policies and procedures. Your SA/LD Program Advisor is listed on your organization’s Club Central page.
  • Connect with the Student Government Association (SGA), as they are responsible for allocating funds to student-led clubs and organizations. Their office is on the second floor of the Student Center, and they meet weekly on Wednesdays at 3:05pm.

Check your campus e-mail regularly so you don’t miss any important updates or deadlines.

Join Executive Central for access to helpful tips and tricks, or follow SA/LD on Instagram to see what is going on at Central @ccsusald.

  • Sign-ups for the fall involvement fair begins in the summer. Make sure you request a table!
  • Mandatory Club training generally takes place within the first month of the fall semester, with additional sessions hosted throughout the year.
  • The SGA typically sends out information about the annual budget process in February or early March.
  • Annual Club Re-registration takes place in April and is due before final exams. This means you need to complete club leader elections before the last day of classes.
  • The last day to request club related purchases is in mid-April.

All club meetings, events, and activities get registered on Club Central, ClubCentral.ccsu.edu. Log in with your BlueNet username and password, and reach out to your SA/LD Program Advisor if you need help with the Club Central management tools for student leaders.
