Art Education: Art Education, BSEd

  • Content: Art Making - Art teacher candidates will demonstrate knowledge of appropriate techniques and processes in a variety of visual media.
  • Content: Art in Context - Art teacher candidates will demonstrate knowledge of art forms, artists, and art works from diverse historical and contemporary contexts.
  • Pedagogy: Planning - Teacher candidates will design comprehensive, sequential art curriculum that incorporates a variety of teaching strategies and considers the developmental appropriateness of K-12 students.
  • Pedagogy: Applying - Art teacher candidates will use a variety of teaching and assessment strategies to promote students' conceptual learning and artistic achievement during select field and student teaching experiences.
  • Reflective Practitioner - Art teacher candidates will engage in self-reflection and analysis of their field and teaching experiences to identify areas for personal growth.

Graphic/Information Design, BA

  • Apply Design Theory - Demonstrate understanding of design principles by applying design theory and process from an artistic perspective;
  • Think Critically/Use of Design Vocabulary - Apply critical thinking to create, organize, and evaluate a graphic/information design portfolio and be able to use design vocabulary appropriately and accurately;
  • UI/UX/Web Design/Social Media - Apply creative problem solving and technical skills in the creation of effective design solutions for social media and website design;
  • Design Print Media - Apply creative problem solving and technical skills in the creation of effective design solutions for print;
  • Design Motion Graphics/Multimedia/3D - Apply creative problem solving and technical skills in the creation of effective design solutions for motion, 3D and multi-media project work.

Studio and Art History: Art, BA

  • Perceptual: Students will demonstrate perceptual skills that include the facility to see more clearly and comprehensively.
  • Conceptual: Students will demonstrate conceptual skills by assimilating the elements and principles of design and applying creative, critical, and philosophical thinking to their work.
  • Technical: Students will demonstrate a proficiency of techniques, knowledge of vocabulary, and an exploration of various media.
  • Translational: Students will conduct studio-based research to construct a thesis and create a series of artworks that articulates this thesis.
  • Art Historical: Students will demonstrate a contextual basis for their art through a study of the art history of diverse cultures, modern and contemporary art, and through the integration of this study in the hands-on process of art making.

Masters Degree: Art Education, MSEd

  • Write reflectively about art: Students will engage in aesthetic inquiry and understand their creative practice and the practice of other artists through the process of looking, reading, and finally through writing about these practices.
  • Develop an original body of artwork for exhibition or original research thesis: Students will demonstrate understanding of creative idea development, direction, and production by:
  • Plan C: Creating a significant, coherent, highly resolved body of work for exhibition.
  • Plan A: Using the methodologies appropriate for art education to examine a topics and/or issues within the discipline.
  • Reference their work in art historical and contemporary context:

  • Strengthen oral critique ability: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the nature and significance of the visual arts and its connections to their studio practice, to other arts, and to daily life through critical reflective dialogue about art.

Masters Degree: Information Design, MA

  • Creative Problem Solve - Students identify a problem, and apply design process and research methodology towards the creation of a solution from an artistic perspective. Students will have demonstrated a familiarity and working knowledge of the different theories and philosophies of graphic/information design;
  • Create (generate/plan/produce) a Professional Design Portfolio - Students apply critical thinking, research methodology, and design practice, to create a well-developed defendable body of design work, demonstrating advanced capabilities with technologies, documentation, and presentation of a professional design portfolio;
  • Leadership Ability - Students demonstrate creative problem-solving skills and knowledge of design theory and practice necessary for a leadership position in a design-related field. Student’s familiarity with current trends and issues in the design field is evaluated by design faculty and professionals in the design field, based on community and professional engagement/participation in addition to the student’s Capstone Project;
  • Communicate Effectively Across Digital Media- Students write and create design work for research, e-publication, and presentation. Student work provides evidence of an ability to effectively organize, interpret, synthesize, evaluate and produce knowledgeable and successful projects in print media, UI, UX, Web, / Social Media, and Motion Graphics / Multimedia, that situate themselves into the framework of the contemporary graphic/information design field
