Special Circumstances for Fingerprinting

Substitute Teachers

Substitute teachers who complete their fingerprinting through CREC or another RESC may use the background check completed each year for substitute teaching for Central field experiences during the school year for which the background check was completed. For example, a background check for substitute teaching completed in October will only be valid through June 30th of the following year. New fingerprinting must be completed each year for substitute teaching and the proof of finger printing and proof of employment as a substitute submitted to the School of Education Dean’s Office, 203 Barnard Hall, by the beginning of the Fall semester. The proof of employment can be a short statement from the school or school district, on official letterhead stating that the candidate is an approved substitute teacher, that there are no issues on the criminal background report, and providing the date of the fingerprinting if possible.

Substitute teachers who have not completed a background check through a RESC must complete one through CREC or another RESC. Background checks conducted through town police departments or agencies other than a RESC for substitute teaching may not be used for Central field experiences.

Field placements will not be changed to match the school district in which a candidate has already completed a criminal background check.

DSAP Students

Candidates completing their certification program under a Durational Shortage Area Permit (DSAP) can use the fingerprinting conducted for employment. The student should submit proof of employment each Fall for the upcoming school year to the School of Education Dean’s Office, 203 Barnard Hall. The proof of employment can be a short statement from the school or school district on official letterhead stating the teaching position the candidate holds, that there are no issues on the criminal background report, and providing the date of the fingerprinting if possible. Other documents are also acceptable. Proof of employment is only good for one school year.

Employed Certified Classroom Teachers in Special Education Strand-B

Candidates in the Special Education MS Degree, Strand-B, who are employed teachers, do all but two field placements in their employing district. Therefore they may provide proof of employment each Fall for the upcoming school year to the School of Education Dean’s Office, 203 Barnard Hall. The proof of employment can be a short statement from the school or school district on official letterhead stating the teaching position the candidate holds, that there are no issues on the criminal background report, and providing the date of the fingerprinting if possible. These candidates will need to do the fingerprinting for a background check for the two placements outside of their employing school. Proof of employment is only good for one school year and should be renewed each fall.

Candidates in Special Education Strand-B who do not hold permanent teaching positions, and all Post-Baccalaureate candidates will have to complete fingerprinting for a background check through a CREC or other RESC.

Employed Certified Teachers Seeking Cross-Endorsement (Matriculated or Non-Matriculated)

Certified teachers who are working on cross-endorsements, whether matriculated or non-matriculated, must provide proof of fingerprinting if they take a class that requires fingerprinting. Those who are employed teachers and do their field placement in the district where they are employed may provide proof of employment to the School of Education Dean’s Office, 203 Barnard Hall. The proof of employment can be a short statement from the school or school district on official letterhead stating the teaching position the candidate holds, that there are no issues on the criminal background report, and providing the date of the fingerprinting if possible. Proof of employment is only good for one school year and may need to be renewed in the fall.

Para-Professional and Other School District Employees

Field placements in all programs except Special Education MS degree Strand B are completed in a variety of districts and schools. Therefore fingerprinting completed for employment as a para-professional or other school district position cannot be used for Central field experiences. The teacher candidates whom this affects should get fingerprinted as an education student.

Candidates in Advanced Certification Programs

Candidates in advanced certification programs, such as the Intermediate Administration and Supervision program who take field experience courses that require fingerprinting, need to submit proof of fingerprinting. If they are employed in a school district, they can submit proof of employment to the School of Education Dean’s Office, 203 Barnard Hall. The proof of employment can be a short statement from the school or school district on official letterhead stating the teaching position the candidate holds, that there are no issues on the criminal background report, and providing the date of the fingerprinting if possible. Proof of employment is only good for one school year and may need to be renewed in the fall.
