Communication Department Internships

Internship credit from the Communication Department at Central is available to Strategic Communication and Media Studies majors and minors who have completed six credits or more in their area of study, have a minimum of 15 COMM credits, and minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major. Such areas include public relations, organizational communication, mass media, media production and performance, and political communication.

Internships are usually worth three credits. Students may complete two internships for credit, but these internships need to take place in two different semesters or sessions. A second internship at the same site must focus on a different activity (i.e. TV station: first internship in production; second internship in media relations).

Each semester hour of credit should equate to five hours of work at the internship each week (a three-credit internship requires 10 hours of work each week and a minimum of 140 hours). Summer internships may have a more flexible schedule as long as the 140-hour requirement is met.

General Requirements

  • You are a Strategic Communication or Media Studies major or minor.
  • You have completed six credits or more in your area of study.
  • You have a minimum of 15 COMM credits.
  • You have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in your major.
  • Your internship relates to your area of study.
  • Your internship is at least 140 hours (10/week during a semester).
  • You complete weekly journals that document the work you’ve done. If your
    internship is over the summer be sure to complete these journals while taking
    part in your internship.

Enrollment in COMM 490

  • You submit 14 weekly journals that you completed during your internship
  • You attend four to five in-person classes that occur throughout the semester.
  • You complete two book reports.
  • You complete a final essay and/or media presentation.
  • Your supervisor must fill out and submit the Intern Evaluation Report before the
    end of the semester.
  • Your supervisor must write a letter of recommendation before the end of the
    semester.

Finding an Internship

It is up to the student to find and secure an internship, however, the internship coordinator can support you with the process. Additionally, it is strongly recommended that you work with the Career Development Office on your resume and to prepare for any potential interviews.

Once you have obtained an internship, fill out the below forms:

Then, please click on the “Open in Desktop App” button at the top right of each document, save the documents to your cloud, hard drive or flash drive and then fill them out. After you have saved the documents, please email them to Carmetta Williams, Communication Department Secretary at williamsc@ccsu.edu and Professor Brad Heck, Internship Coordinator, at heck@ccsu.edu After both forms are received, he will register you for the course.

At the end of your internship, your supervisor must fill out the below evaluation and email it directly to Carmetta Williams, Communication Department Secretary at williamsc@ccsu.edu and Professor Brad Heck, Internship Coordinator, at heck@ccsu.edu.
