If you would like to apply for work at the Writing Center, two kinds of positions are available:

Office Assistant

Office Assistants welcome visitors to the Writing Center, assist visitors with making appointments and other questions, and work, as needed, on Writing Center data collection and assessment.

This position is only available for students who have work-study and are able to work during our normal hours of operation. The Career Success Center posts this position whenever openings are available, so please check the College Central Network page. Hours are dependent upon availability during regular Writing Center hours.

Writing Center Tutor

Writing Center Tutors work in one-on-one sessions with Central writers, assist with Writing Center outreach and initiatives, and participate in regular professional development and ongoing training. The most effective Writing Center tutors empathize with the complexities of writing and facilitate active engagement from writers.

Our tutors are undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduates interested in becoming Writing Center tutors are required to take, complete, and pass WRT 280: Tutoring Writing, which fulfills a general education Skill Area 1, Communication Skills requirement. The class helps you learn more about tutoring and can be helpful beyond work in the Writing Center, as we talk about how to help people who come from various backgrounds and experiences navigate academic and other writing. It is a helpful class for future teachers and writers as well. Depending on current Writing Center staffing needs, it is possible to take it in the same semester that you begin tutoring in the Writing Center.

If you are interested in becoming a Writing Center tutor, send Dr. Amanda Fields a letter of application detailing your interest in the Writing Center, a brief resumé with a few listed references, and a brief writing sample. Undergraduates will need to state a commitment to completing WRT 280. To better inform your application, please familiarize yourself with the Writing Center website and schedule a tutoring appointment to work on your writing.
